F1 vs F1B vs Multigen Goldendoodles: Which Is Right for Your Family?

Almost every family who calls us asks the same question in the first five minutes: "What does F1B mean?" It is a fair question, because the generation of a Goldendoodle changes what you can expect from the coat, and to a lesser degree the size and temperament.

F1: the first cross

An F1 Goldendoodle is a purebred Golden Retriever bred to a purebred Poodle. The puppies are 50 percent Golden and 50 percent Poodle. F1 coats are usually wavy and soft, and they shed lightly. Most families with no allergies are very happy with an F1, and many people think the F1 has the most classic "teddy bear" look.

F1B: bred back to the Poodle

An F1B is an F1 Goldendoodle bred back to a Poodle. That makes the puppy roughly 75 percent Poodle and 25 percent Golden Retriever. The coat is curlier and sheds even less, which is why we point families with allergies toward F1B litters. Curlier coats do need more regular brushing and grooming.

Multigen: consistency

Multigen (multigenerational) Goldendoodles come from two doodle parents of later generations. Breeding doodle to doodle lets us aim for a more predictable coat type and size across the whole litter. If you want the lowest-shedding, most consistent outcome, ask about our multigen litters.

Which one should you choose?

If nobody in your home has allergies, an F1 or multigen gives you the widest range of coat looks. If someone does, choose an F1B or a multigen litter with curly-coated parents.
